In addition to education, which outstands as its chief mission, ULK assumes two other important missions; namely: research and services to the community. As far as research is concerned, ULK possesses a scientific journal which publishes articles related to Rwanda current issues as well as those regarding the sub-region, Africa and the world.

Scientific articles published by lecturers appeared for the first time in the Scientific Review number 1 in December 2001. Some important themes dealt with were:
